Now a known face across India after the roaring success of her movie Bahubali, we decided to dig into the life of this gorgeous damsel, and reveal a few facts that will certainly leave her humongous fan base with surprise.
We’ll take you through the lesser known facts of this actress – one that has left many a men weak in the knees.
Born in Mangalore, Karnataka, in 1981, Anushka was named Sweety Shetty and only adopted the pseudonym Anushka when she got into the film industry.
Anushka’s parents are Prafulla and A.N. Vittal Shetty and she has two brothers as well, namely Gunaranjan Shetty and Sai Ramesh Shetty. Her brother Sai Ramesh Shetty is a reputed cosmetic surgeon.
Not many people know this, but she did her schooling in Bangalore and even completed her Bachelors in Computer Applications from Mount Carmel’s Girl’s College, the same college Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone studied in.
Personally trained by renowned yoga master Bharat Thakur, she herself has got the certification of a Yoga teacher. Much before she hit the silver screen as an actress, she started her own institute for Yoga and was quite successful in her endeavor.
It was her Yoga teacher Bharat Thakur who insisted that she join the film industry. Not that keen on entering the industry, as she had never dreamed of becoming an actress, she decided to give it a shot just for the heck of it.
Almost dragged to the sets, she auditioned for director Puri Jagannath’s movie ‘Super’. She starred opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna, but the movie tanked at the box-office.
Despite her failure, she continued to appear into movies hoping she would strike gold at the box office. In 2006, she received her first taste with success with the film Vikramarkudu. The film was directed by SS Rajamouli and she came into the spotlight as she shared screen space with Ravi Tega.
After proving to the South Indian industry that she has the talent to stir the emotions of the audience, she made a bold decision to sport a bikini in the movie Billa. This move increased her fan following ten-fold, and almost overnight she became a sex symbol with men in south-Indian dying to catch a glimpse of her beauty.
Now in the limelight, tabloids often paired her with actor Gopichand, but the duo despite their attractive onscreen chemistry, time and time again downplayed the rumors.
In 2007, Anushka made yet another bold move by acting for the first time ever in her career in a Tamil film. Her entry into the industry wasn’t a roaring success initially, but she crashed into the hearts of Tamil movie buffs with her role in the movie Singham. Superstar Suriya shared screen space with her in this blockbuster.
Her 2009 role in the movie Arundanti unsurprisingly helped her bag the Nandi Award under the category of Best Actress.
In 2015, she was all over the gossip columns of tabloids when she charged a whopping 5-crores for her role as Queen Rudramadevi. Her performance was met with critical praise and a certain surge in her fan following, and to put the cherry on the cake, she bagged three Filmfare, one Nandi and three CineMAA Awards for her startling adaption of Queen Rudramadevi.
Anushka thus became the highest paid South Indian actress ever at that time.
She reached the summit of her career when she starred in Rajamouli’s 120-crore (US$18 million) blockbuster ‘Bahubali: The Beginning’. Thus, she became the first South Indian actress to star in two films directed by Rajamouli. Even before its worldwide release on July 10th, 2015, Bahubali was making headlines for its huge production cost. To the shock of many, especially Bollywood producers, the movie met with rave reviews globally. The exposure Anushka received globally spiraled her career and she became an Indian actress to reckon with. The film grossed over 600-crores (US$89 million) worldwide, making it the highest grossing Indian film in India ever, the third highest Indian film globally and the most successful Telugu film ever, and tumbled multiple records along the way.

For her latest movie, Size Zero, Anushka shocked her fans when she put on 20-kilograms to play an obese girl. She opted against using the body suit and impressed all with the feat. Considering she’s a fitness freak by heart and a professional Yoga trainer, her decision shocked all.
Though Anushka has been rumored to have been linked with numerous co-stars, she doused the fire surrounding it by stating that the only love she has in her life is love for acting. She even emphasized that she’s only willing to get married after 3-4 years and that her parents will find a suitable partner for her.
