Before becoming one of Bollywood’s most sought-after actresses, Sonam was like any other regular girl, frivolous in nature, and her health and beauty less than a priority.
The daughter of Bollywood mega-star Anil Kapoor and ex-model and designer Sunita Kapoor, Sonam was born on June 9th, 1985.
Attending the Arya Vidya Mandir School in Bombay, Sonam was known to be carefree, on the naughtier side and nimble with regard to studies. The only challenge Sonam faced while growing up was maintaining her weight.
Like most kids, Sonam was excessively self-indulgent in sweets, cakes, chocolates and junk food, resulting in her being overweight, having unhealthy skin and suffering from insulin resistance. A disorder she has now vowed to spread awareness about.
At the time when she was attending the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore for her pre-university education, Sonam had no plans of becoming part of the movie industry.
In a span of two years she gained immense amount of weight and packed an unbelievable 90-kilograms. Now looking at her, it’s kind of shocking right?
She even once stated in an interview, “I never planned a career in films. I neglected my diet and I put on so much of weight”.
It was only when director Sanjay Leela Bansali approached her to star in his film Saawariya did she focus on losing weight. Almost overnight she went from someone lacking ambition to the girl we now see on the screen.
For the next two-years she embarked on an almost impossible journey for millions – to shed 35-kilograms.
How Did She Begin?
With the constant support and help from her mother and family, Sonam decided to put aside what she loved the most – ice creams, chocolates, fried foods and sweets, and started on a rigorous regime to shed her flab.
Who Helped Her Lose Weight?
Unlike most of us who hit the gym only an hour a day, Sonam’s determination ensured that she was working towards her fitness round the clock.
From Power Yoga, to Pilates, to high-intensity cardiovascular workouts, dancing and swimming, she made sure she sweated it out to achieve the body that now makes both men and women swoon over.
Reputed trainer Zarine Watson looked over her overall fitness while Bharat Thakur assisted her with Power Yoga, Yasmin Karachiwala with Pilates and Shervir and Monisha with the rigours of power or weight lifting – a measure to tone her body.
How Does She Now Maintain Her Slim Figure?
In order to maintain her desirable body and maintain one of the slimmest figures in Bollywood, Sonam now jogs for an hour, followed by half an hour of Yoga and meditation and another thirty minutes of high intensity cardiovascular exercises.

Having already lost 35-kgs prior to entering the Bollywood industry, Sonam reached the peak of her fitness when she starred in Bewakoofiyan, which was directed by Nupur Asthana and produced by Aditya Chopra.
Sonam sported a red-bikini that left the audience and her fans around the globe drooling over her chiseled bod.
She credited her fitness to celebrity trainer Radhika Karle who drafted a rigorous regime for her to scorch the screens.
