While most couples cannot unfortunately look at their past with pride and achievement, Anil and Sunita can. The Very Beginning…
Before Anil Kapoor became a global star, he was just a regular guy going through the struggles of life, trying to make ends meet and struggling to land a role that would enable him to break into the industry. All day he shuffled between media houses trying to find work to make him see the light at the end of the tunnel. On the other hand, his love to be was already successful, a model and the daughter of a reputed Banker. Her career was flying sky-high while Anil’s hadn’t even begun. Seems like the tale in the movie Notting Hill doesn’t it?

When they first met in the 80’s, Anil was completely smitten by her beauty and delicate nature. Despite the fact that they spoke on their first meeting briefly, Anil had no clue how he could contact her again. Luckily, a friend managed to get a hold of her phone number.
After serious contemplation and the overcoming the fear of being rejected by this successful model, Anil picked up and dialed the number of the girl- one he would dreamed of spending the rest of his life with.
To his relief, she reverted his zealous excitement to speak and they got off almost instantly. For weeks he spoke to her and flattered her with his one of a kind humor but there was something else on his mind that he couldn’t yet muster the courage to bring up. Day and night he pictured himself dating her but had no idea how to bring up the topic.

He once said in an interview, “I met her on the telephone, and fell in love with her voice. I feel shy and awkward when I speak about her, but I love speaking about her. She is wonderful she is beautiful; she is the best thing that has happened to me.”
Finally he did ask her and she responded unhesitantly. Already earning the big bucks through her shoots as a model, the couple still reminisces the days when she would catch a cab to meet him while he would shuttle buses to their meeting point. A friend of the pair even one said, “In those days, Anil was rather broke and most of the times when the two went on dates either alone or with me along, Sunita usually picked up the tab.”

Now isn’t she one of a kind?
Months past and the couple eventually became glued to each other. He recalls the time when he used to accompany her to shoots and sometimes she even used to postpone shoots to spend time with him. Actor Gulshan Grover even pulled out a funny story when once he and Anil accompanied Sunita to drop her off at the airport for a shoot she was going to do abroad. He narrated, “She was travelling abroad for 20-25 days and instead of talking to her and telling her how much he would miss her, Anil fell asleep on her shoulder.”
While she was abroad on her shoots, Anil continued to try and land a break through role. Despite being the son of a producer, his struggle to break into the industry almost made him give up. While he continued to feature in side roles in Tollywood and Bollywood, his big break came in the 1983 hit ‘Woh Sat Din’. At that time, his goal was not to become a global star but to make his lady love proud.

The Hurdles They Faced
His success then did bring in quite a few hurdles for this dreamy couple to overcome. With the burden of their families disagreeing with their union, Anil had to even face the biggest producers in the industry coaxing him to not get married. And having just become a mega-star after the hit Mashal (1984), the decision to choose between the two weighed him down. He finally made a decision. Any guesses? “In those days the industry believed that the audience liked an actor only until he was unmarried. My well-wishers thus advised me not to get married else my career would be ruined. But then I asked myself, what is more important to me, my relationship with my girlfriend whom I know for years or my career? I was puzzled. But then it struck me that I am in a love with such a beautiful girl and we have been together since 5 years and stuck together through thick and thin, and so marriage was paramount for me that time.”

Life As A Married Couple
Thirty two years has passed since this celebrity couple vowed to stand by each other and the flame they share doesn’t seem likely to be doused. Ever since they got hitched, Anil has credited his wife for all the success he has achieved as an actor. Not soon after marriage did she quit and focused on supporting his career and their family. He even credits her to making him look more presentable and designing most of his outfits. So much so that Anil has ever since preferred his wife by his side, even if he has to do shoots out of the country. Their beautiful daughter and actress Sonam Kapoor once was quoted as saying, “As children, we got very little family time as dad liked mom to accompany him whenever he travelled. But whenever we did, it was awesome. It feels lovely to see how much he loves her.”

Rumours, Affairs & Controversies
While the media and gossip surrounding celebrity couples is the reason behind most of them splitting and parting ways, Anil and Sunita have just turned a deaf ear to the buzz making the rounds about his alleged extramarital affairs. While at his peak, Anil was rumoured to have had a steamy affair with his co-stars Madhuri Dixit and Shilpa Shirodkar but time and time again has laughed off the rumours.
“I got a lot of opportunities to fall in love and out of it, as I worked with many beautiful stars, but I thought to myself whether I wanted 2 minutes of joy or a lifetime of happiness. I am extremely happy with Sunita.”
